CHURCH AND STATE.

TROUBLE WITH FRENCH VILLAGERS. PARIS, November 21. The French populace offered considerable resistance in Brittany and elsewhere, to Government officials making inventories of Church property. A heap of sulphur was fired inside a church at Pignan, necessitating the breaking of a window to expel the fumes. Men then climbed on to the roof and tried to feed the flumes; with sulphur, and women execrated and obstructed the firemen whose services were sought. At other places the tocsin summoned the populace, who gave the troops much trouble. The parish priest at Couronne lay across the threshold of the outer door until removed. No fatalities have been reported.
