AGRICULTURAL TOPICS. A correspondent of a Masterton paper proposes to make a practical every day use of the Agricultural Society. He says: It woul I prove a great practical assis'ance to agriculturists and past oral ist a in the Wairarapa to collect all doubtful plants occurring on their properties and bring thrm to the rooms of the Agricultural Society and have them all carefully dried and named for future reference. It serves as a good means of illustrating the form and growth of all objectionable plants. According to Mr Gilruth, the Givernment Veterinarian, the oHinan man who is about to treat a sick animal is always in a violent hurry—why, it is difficult to say The audience at Gladstone laughed the other night when Mr Gilruth said the first step taken was to lift the head up—to haul it up by means of a rope over the rafter, with a man at the end of the rope. A drench could not be properly administered with the animal in a recumbent position and the head forced up. No animal could drink with its head up. 'Try it yourselves, " said Mr Gilruth with vigour, and the audience laughed appreciativety. '• The only thing that can drink with its head up is a hen," said the lecturer, whose concluding remarks were drowned in roars of hilarity. Great attention is now being paid in Germany to the occurrence of dust in mi'k, and the following method of detecting it and estimating its quantity roughly has been adopted. A piece of tinned iron, large enough to rest on the top of the churn, has a circular hole five or six inches in diameter in its centre. This hole is filled with a fine sieve, carrying a sheet of wet wadding, On this is supported a wide-necked funnel, but the wadding reaches beyond the funnel-neck in all directions. The .edge of the neck is sharp, so that it sinks into the wadding, whereby all milk poured into the funnel must pass through the wadding. The apparatus is used in the following way, The contents of the churn are well stirred with a cler.n stick, and the contents are then poured into a clean can. The filter is then placed on the top of the churn, and the milk is poured from the can into the funnel so as to return to the churn. When it has been poured back, if dust is present in the milk, there will be a dirty disc marking the mouth of the funnel, surrounded by the clean wadding outside the funnel neck. Medicine should never be administered to mares in foal, unless absolutely necessary on account of illness, and then only when it has been carefully prescribed. If the mares are in good health they do not require medicine when the foals are taken from them. When the foals are not thriving, because of worms, they should receive half a drachm of sulphate of iron in powder, given in a little mash once a day for a week or two. A lump of rock salt, placed within their reach, usually answers the purpose of expelling worms in a comparatively short time. GEO. STONE, Family Butcher, i HAMILTON. Meat of the Best Quality Only.
