Government Endorsement.
The tabooing of alcohol by our Generals has received Government endorsement in some of the official handbooks. In the bints to officers in South Nigeria we read : " Brandy ought never to be touchtd unless ordered by a physician. If a man has been a total abstainer before coming to West Africa, my advice to him is to remain so. Coffee, tea, and cocoa are excellent restoratives for the fatigued body, or the weariei brain, and are far better in the performance of hard work than alcohol. " The whole history of armies proves the value of total abstinence, and the experience of military authorities is confirmed by that of other obseivers. The lumbermen of Canada perform wonderful feats of endurance without a drop of alcohol. The International Oougresa of Alpine Climbers excludes alcohol from the list of provisions carried during difficult assents. Dr. Nansen would have none of it in his stores for consumption.
