Local and General.

We have baen requested (o draw the attention of ratepayers to the fact that all rates are legally due 14 da>s after thy notices are is«u-id, aud not, as is generally supposed, on March 31st, which is the date after which rates can b.< su *d for. Cr. Duxtield told the Waipa County Council yesterday that he had made inquiries as to where metal c-<uld be obtained near ' e Kowhii, aud had fouod that blue metal existed on Mr Huut's farm. On his suggestion the supervisor was instructed to report atjnext meeting. In addition to donations already acknowledged, the Band and Baziar committee are in receipt of donations from the following : Dillicar Bros., Farmers' Supply Stores, Gutteridge and Pocock, Hallenstein Bros., Mr Lacey, Miss Bastable, Mr S. Tucker, Mesdames * aynes (3), Miss Zellman, Miss Churches, Mr Nicholson, Mrs Gurnell, Mrs Thompson and Mrs Adams. The Waipa County Council yesterday decided to obtain legal advice as to bringing actions against owners of flax waggons neglecting to register under the bylaw regulating the cartage of fiix. It was likewise decided to instiuct Mr Swarbrick to demand of Mr Gould the removal of the tramway at the Pironnia bridge, hj« having ignored the request of the Council as formulated at the last meeting. The Hamilton Baud aud Fire Brigade Bazaar, a four day's function, is to be opened by the Deputy Mayor (Mr Davis) at 8 o'clock to-night. A torchlight proc«ssiou, including Band, Fire Brigade, Kifla Cadets, Oddfellows, Druids and decorated bicycles, will be formed at 7 p.rn, and will march from London-street to the Town Hall. The Colleen fihu and other attractions have arrived, and there will no doubt ba a large attendance of the public to-night. Yesterday, Cr. Bell, reporting to the Waipa County Council on the appiiaation for a billiard room at Frankton, said Mr Swarbrick informed him that nothing could be done without the intro iuotion of a by-law dealing with the matter. Apart from this, he found there was considerable opposition to the proposal, and he would not advocate running counter to the wishes of ratepayers. He suggested that the question ba deferred until next meeting, in order that he might gain further information as to public opinion.

At yesterday's meeting of the Waipa County Council, Cr. Allen Bell took occasion to refute allegations made that he had indiscriminately allowed Hamilton contractors to take gravel from the Council's pit at No. 1 bridge, which was sold at 3s 6d per yard. I'his, he said, was absolutely fala"; the only gravel taken out of the pit was taken with the consent of the Council. The report had spread far and wide and he wished to give this public denial, He felt very strongly on the matter, as the author of the statement should, in common courtesy, have first asked him whether such was the case; again, the matter should have been reported to the Council and not to the Supervisor, as was the case, iu a private letter. Inquiry from the Supervisor elicited the fact that the writer of the letter was an ex councillor, which, in his opinion, made tho offence all the greater than had it been from a ratepayer unacquainted with the proper procedure. The Chairman (Mr J. Fisher) said that he was sure Crs. did not attach any importance whatever to the rumours Circulating outside. Councillors concurred, and the matter was allowed to drop.
