FRANCE AND THE POPE
CLERGY WILL RESIST THE STATE. PAKIS, September 5. Eighty-one French prelates met, and telegraphed to the Pope, expressing profound gratitude to him for his luminous directions. They promised to try to iiud a fitting solutionof the Church and State dilliculty, It is reported that the clergy intend to barricade the churches and refuse to abaudon them, since the Pope, while forbidding violence, did not prohibit passive resistance.
