GISBORNE-WAIKATO STOCK ROUTE

We clip the following from the Gisborne Times:—

The necessity of the speedy prosecution of the road from Gisborne to VVaikarenioana, via Hamraroa, is every day buing further evidenced, and it is hoped that the local agitation will result in a considerable sum voted for the work during the coming session. Yesterday Mr W. Gaudin, hon. secretary of the East Coast Eailway League, received the following letter, which was forwarded to Hod. Jas. Carroll, from the Hamilton branch of the Farmers' Union :—" New Zealand Farmers' Union, Hamilton branch :—Dear Sir, — GisborneWaikato stock route : At the last meeting of the above branch the question of a more direct stock route from Gisborne to the Waikato, via Rotorua, than that via Napier, was discussed, and I was directed to bring under your notice the urgent necessity for the construction of this road. Several routes have been suggested, but that from Gisborne, via Hangaioa, to Like Waikaremoana, thence to the present Rotorua coich road at Ruatahuna—a distance uncompleted of about seventeen miles—was advocited as the shortest, the best for travelling stock and the cheapest to construct. This work is regarded by farmers of both provinces as next in importance to the completion of the N.Z. Main Trunk railway, and it is earnestly hoped the Government will regard the matter as urgent, and have the work put in hand without deiay. I would also call your attention to th 9 great difference in prices for sheep realised at the Gisborne sales in February last as compared with those obtained at Ohaupo, Waikato. At the latter place the prices averaged fully half as much again as those at Gisborne. This was undoubtedly due chiefly to the absence of a good stock route between the two districts. We trust you will see your way to have this work commenced without any delay, and by its completion confer a great boon on the farmers of both provinces.— bfour faithfully, E. Horneman, Hon. Secretary."
