ANGLO-TURKISH CRISIS
EXPLANATION BY SIR E GREY. LONDON, May 8. lu the House of Commons, the Foreign Minister (Sir Edward Grey), iij reply to Mr Balfour, reviewed the events connected with Tabah and the island of Faraon. He said the Porte contended, first, that Akabah and the Sinai Peninsula were outside the territory defined by the Imperial Firman of 1892; and, secondly, the Grand Vizier's telegram of April Bth, 1892, only referred to the western side of the peninsula. The interpretation of the telegram concerned the Porte alone.
TURKISH REINFORCEMENTS.
LONDON, May 8. Turkey is sending artillery and strong reinforcements to Akaba and Tabah.
BRITISH ADMIRAL OFF ATHENS.
LONDON, May 7, Vice-Admiral Lord Charles Beresford, with the Mediterranean squadrou, has arrived in the Bay of Phaleron, off Athens, and will proceed to Piraeus and await orders regarding the dispute with Turkey. The Constantinople correspondent of The Times reports that it is felt that the part played by the Sultan's representative in Egypt, Mukhtar Pasha, will justify Great Britain in refusing to allow a Turkish representative to remain at Cairo, as the Commissioner's mission apparently is to encourage an anti.British agitation, subsidised from Constantinople.
