THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
•-hiij" 1 ! iTOTHE EDITOR. ■ ■■■-^ Siß,-The names «f the candidates for the Hamilton Mayoralty are now definitely before the ratepayers. ■ The chief question at issue is generally tobewhether;, cattle shall be allowed to wander at large at all hours, of the night, to, the life, limb andi property,,or whether their owners are to be compelled to keep them enclosed batween sunset and sunrise. Some of the ratepayerß , 'appear to be of the' opinion that this question has been settled, aud that the appointment of a will eventuate no matter which of the candidates is returned. I woHld'remind such that a resolution of the' Hamilton Borough Council is not like the laws of the Medesand Persians, which "altereth not," and should the election result in the return of the cattle party's candidate, we shall have a determined attempt, headed, by the new Mayor, to rescind .the resolution in favour of the appointment, and that cattle will be allowed to /run when and: where they please. If rumour is correct,; the candidate himself is riot altogether uninterested in the matter, for while' professedly; championing the cause of the f'.paor ratepayers'! : he is directly championing bis own.-1 am, etc., , : :' ;,'■: ,v■;•■!.:;,. .■■■" :i RATEPAYER.
