Sydnry, November 14, Mr Larks, Canadian Commissioner, 9ayg he found New Zoaland knew nothing of trade conditions in Canada, and farmers took alarm at the proposed reciprocal treaty because they thought it would cut theie trade to pieces, though, as a matter of fact, it would be the other way aoout. The timber trade also became alarmed, especially the Kauri Timber Company, and that set the North Island against the treaty. There was, moreover, no time to educate those interested, and the result was a small panic in regard to the treaty. There are a large number of members of the New Zua* land Parliament, according to Mr Larke, who would give a subsidy to the Vancouver mail service if the subsidy to the San Francisco service were withdrawn; but that, he explains, is not the intention of the pro motors,
