WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.

At the usual monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council, held nfc Ohaupo on Tuesday, there were present: Ors. Atkinson (cowman), Kusato, Teasdale, Vickera. Mandeno, Smith and Finch. Dinsuale's Ro.\D.-The Engineer reported on Mr Dinsdalo's application for a road leading to his farm, He recommended that the work, which was estimated to cost £lO, be carried out.

Hall's Gate..—MrHall's application for permission to erect a swing gate, held over from last meeting, was not sanctioned, as an objection had been lodged by Mr Dinsdale

Stokrs' Cui/ravr.-The Engineer reported that there was a bid crack in the stone culvert known as "Stokes'/' and the matter was left in his hands.

DAMAGES.-It will be remembered that at last meeting Mr A. Wallace applied for £5 damages for loss incurred by a mare, through putting her foot through a rotten plank in a bridge. This time Mr Wallace waited on the Council and explained the affair. His little daughter was riding a thoroughbred mare over the Pukerimu Bridge on September 9th. The mare pub her foot through a rotten plank, and had it nearly torn off, and her hip ricked. He claimed £5 damages, but did not consider that would cover half the loss.-Cr. Finch did not think the Council were at all liable for such an accident.—Cr. Mandeno said he was always averse to going to law, but he considered they would have to risk it on this occasion, as he did not see how the Council could be held responsible—Or. Finch proposed that they should not acknowledge the liability in any shape or form.-Cr. Smith seconded.-Carried. Pile-driver.-It was resolved to let the pile-driver to Mr Doyle for Is per day. Plans.-Approved plans were received from Mr E. de C. Diury, surveyor, for Section 101, Horotiu. Clearing Notices,-As Mr A. Alexander, of Pukete, applied to have 50 or 60 chains of clearing done on the road to his place, it was decided to serve the ownen of the adjoining properties with notices to clear furze, etc.

Defective Culvert. - An application from Mr C. #. Kelly, „f Forest Lake, for a culvert to prevent the water flowing on his farm was allowed to stand over. Crowley's Drain.-Mr T. Crowley, of Frankturi, asked that the work recently done to the drain for Mr Bettley be continued, as the water now encroached on his property.—The eugineer was instructed to see Mr Crowley, and make arrangements for earring out the work. ' " •

RESIGNAWON.-The following letter was put in by Mr E, de Drury, clerk to the Council. "Li accordance with by-law 1, sub-section 4, of the County Council Act, I have the honour herewith to hand you my resignation as returning officer and collector to the Council. ,1 have to sincerely thank the Councilc or the courtesy shown me on all occasions. Owing to the increase in iny professional duties, I cannot in justice to the Council continue to hold my appointment."-The chairman and several members spoke highly of the manner in which Mr Drury discharged his duties, and his resignation was accepted with regret.— Or. Teasdale moved that tendeis be called for the position of elerk and collector to the Counflil.—Or. Manderio would second the motion if a proviso were added that suitability of applicants would be taken into consideration quite as much as the amount of salary; Both the chairman and Cr. Finch spoke strongly in favour of making the salary a fixed one, £BS, and.an amendment was* proposed byCr. Finch arid seconded by the chairman to that effect. The motion was, however, carried by 5 to 2. The amount of the security was fixed at'two bondsmen at £SOO each. ■ Tenders.^The following tenders for works were received :-Forming Mill Road, Paterangii: Offerscu and > HigginsonForming 5s 6d, ditching 2s lid, pipes 19s; McKinnon r 4s3d, Is (Hand 12s (accepted). -Forming Nesshausen's ;Road,: Offersou and Higuinson-Forming 6s 6d, ditching 2s, pipes 20s; Nabbs-Forming, 3s 9d (accepted); McKinnon-Forming 5s 9d, Jitcbing Is 6d, pipes 125,-Forming Tuhikaramea' Road: R. Carter-Forming 4s ditching 4s 6d, pipes 15s; R. WaiteForming 3s - . 6d, pipes 10s (accepted). - Forming approaches to Mangapiko Bridge: McNaulißros., 12s per chain; Offersou and .Higginson, 13s; Nabbs, 7s 6d (accepted).-: Forming, at Cronin's, Paterangi-Alexandra Road : McNaul, 3s 10' d per chain- Nabbs, 3s 3d; Offerson\a'nd Co. 3s (accepted).•The action of the'fiiigineer and Cr. Smith in accepting the tender of Bearsley and Bygrave • for' work at Temple's 1 Hill, at 12s :6d per chain, was endorsed.
