School Bridge.-Mr A. Armstrong reported on this matter :-To His Worship the Mayor of Hamilton.-Sir,-Agreeable to instructions I have inspected the works now being carried out in, Grey-street, Hamilton East. I find' that the contractor bad been working in a rather;irregular manner, and that the levels had been lost. Inconsequence of this I found it was necessary to take'a fresh set of levels over the whole of the work. While doing this I had pegs put in at the end of each chain, and.on the south side of; the- approach" the pegs ~were; sunk into ;.the ; 'ground Ho' the proper depth, but on the north side there remained ttio much soil-to' be excavated to enable this to be easily done. In carrying the levels through I found that the embankment was fully 4ft.' under the proper-level, 1 not allowing for subsidence, which here would b3 between 2 and 3ft. • more; The •slopes also required running but'to give the specified width;at the base. I' instructed . the, contractor to confine his operations for the present to the south side of the gully, and to finish that to the grade shown on the section... My reason for this was that I think to carry out the work to the, extent shown on the cross sections would produce more soil than would be necessary to complete the embankment, when of' course any soil shifted beyond this would '■ have to be paid for as an extra. In the meantime 1 1 will work out the quantities and find out what will ba needed t» finish the filling. When I have ascertained this I propose to run the grade on the north side to a depth sufficient to produce the balance required. •Here, however, I am placed at some little, disadvantage in having to work from scaled dimensions taken from' a tracing.' I hoped to have this done before now,' but owing to the pressure of other duties I have' been unable to overtake this part of the work I would recommend an advance of £4O on the work.-The report was received and adopted.-Cr. Tippin moved that the con-i tractor be granted an extension of time to AttnNovember.-Seo.raded'by Cr. Slade and 'carried...'..--' "j RANGBR.-Cr. Gwynne moved that the Mayor and Crs. Slade and Gwynne be a committee to draw up the duties of ranger and report at a meeting on 27th November applications to be in at the meeting of the Council on Tuesday, 10th December, and that this meeting adjourn until Wednesday, 27th November.-Seconded by Cr.
