The . New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. (Limited) reports :- London, September 20th.—Live stock from Australia per the Southern Cross; Subsequent inspection has confirmed our report upon the a'bove, forwarded to you on the 13th inst, The heavy mortality amongst the cattlo, which will seriously affect their insurance in future, is attributed mainly to the rough handling they received during shipment; whilst the sheep were packed too closely. In addition, it is believed that the quality of the fodder supplied for us on the passage was by no means satisfactory. The cattle arrived in a dull market, and it has not been possible to find buyow for the ■whole of the shipment, there being still some 200 head unsold, while a number hav9 been slaughtered and sol J at Sniithfield. The prices realised at Deptford range from £ll 10-s to £l7 per head, with an average of, say £ls, while at Smithneld from 2s 6d to 3s 4d per : 81b ihas been uecured for tha beef, with an average of about 3s per 81b. Tha sheep? as already reported were a very mixed lot. and only in store condition, many of them' being extremely thin and poor. They sold at 23s a head, a price which compares very unfavourably with that secured for River Plate sheep at thesame time, viz, 35s per head. The result of the shipment pelSouthern Cross shows that in order to ensure tha successful export of : Australian live stock for sale here the following conditions are essential, in addition to the selection of animals suited to the. requirements of this market: (a) Great care in handling while being put on board export! vessel; '(b) special appliances on biard for:conveyance such as those which exist in tjje steamers used in the North American cattle trade; (c) an ample supply of good and suitable fodder; (d) proper arrangements for the speedy and discharge froro carrying vessel jit destination, such as those which exist in the North American cattle steamers.
