RAILWAY DEVELOPMENT IN CHICAGO.

While London is preparing to be honeycombed with electric railways, Chicago, with the same growing tendency, proposes a novel extension of' its elevated railway system. In that city of "sky scrapers" the overhead trains; are hemmed in on every side, and in a new line to be constructed it is intended to bore tunnels through the first floors of the adjacent buildings, the railways will be made oo its own foundations, and will be entirely independent of -the houses through which it runs for support. With the exception, ot street crossings, the whole length of the line will be surmounted by some eight .floors, while throughout the rights way shops will be arranged on either side. It'is 1 intended to utilise electricity as a motive power, and the whole scheme, if carried into effect, will demonstrate some of the skyward possibilities of construction when the entire surface of the earth shall be appropriated.
