DEATH OF AN OLD WAIKATO SETTLER.

Mr John Ferguson, of Whatawhata; who had been ailing 'for Rome, time* pasty aM had reached the good old age of eighty-four years, died at his residence on Saturday night. The deceased •was one of the earliest settlers' in Waiiatd, having traded-with the Maoris for ; many vears before the war. A'striking characteristic of the late Mr Ferguson 'was a straightforward,! almost brusque vm'ariner of speaking, but under which'he 'had a kind heart; and as an honest man In all his dealings he possessed the 4respect of all who knew him. 'The interment took place at the Whatawhata •cemetery.yesterday, at 2> p.m., the Rev. Mr Heudrie conducting the service, a large number of friends and neighbours ! being; present.
