This; is a serious matter for a settler, the money value of the mares alone not being less than £3O.

" A SmaJl Fruitgrower" writes to the Editor Since reading in your columns _ about the new insect pest discovered in Cambridge, and which is said to attack Japanese plums, I have examined some young trees purchased a few months ago, Upon several of the Larcre Yellow variety I found a number of small reddishbrown insects moving actively about upon the under-side of the leaves. These insects are not unlike the turnip, flea, but are lighter, in colour. Is this the new insect pest ? and if so, would you mind giving the remedy for it."—(The kerosene emulsion, the formula for which recently appeared in our columns, wouid, in all probability, be found a safe remedy,-En].

Carnall's Reliable Embrocation is a colonial production, and is good for "both man and beast.' The largest lioivenwners in the North Island have given their verdict in favour of it, and as it is cheaper, and quite as efficacious than any other embrocation in the market, those who require anything of the kind will do well togive it a trial. An advertisement will befound in another column.

Doubtless one of the most important points in connection with dressmaking is that ladies dresses fit thoroughly,.Those ladies who entrust their materials to the Misses Reid, of Wellington-street West (opposite the Opera House), Auck* land, will in this respect, as well as in the excellence of their work generally, find every satisfaction. We therefore urge otir lady friends in the Waikato to bestow ashare of their patronage on these young, ladies, whose advertisement appears elsewhere.

The negotiations in connection witli the purchase of "The Lake," Mr IL Bullock-Webster's property, near HamiV ton, referred to in last issue, have, we are' pleased to report, been brought to a successful termination, a bargain having been con- - eluded, and Mr Walter, the new proprietor will take up his residence amongst us at an early date. From the few remarks let fall as to Mr Walter's social qualifications the district is to be congratulated upon securing so desirable a resident. We understand Mr Walter, who is a son of one of the proprietors of the London Times, i« ; a gentlemen of high scholastic attainments and a gifted musician. We trust the favourable impression made, which induced Mr Waltei to secure this delighfnt property will be added to when he takes Dp' his residence amongst us. The price paid for the property lias not transpired, but' some time aprc the selling price was mentioned, and we feel bound to say that m almost any other part of the colony such a desirable estate would have brought double: the money at that time set upon it.
