BAD TIMES IN NEW ZEALAND.
/. ;' ♦ —— Under the above heading the Sydney Mail says: -There .were 220 passengers on board the Union Company's steamer Tarawera, which on Monday arried from Wellington. Many were excursionists, many bound to Wyalong or Coolgardie, and not a few who have left New Zealand because | that colony is overdone with labour. One of the latter stated that in' the South Island business and in Christchurch, Timaru r! Oamaru, and the once busy Scotch city-rDunedin, the principal streets at almost all hoars of the daywere absolutely deserted, as compared with any •of the '< Australian' towns of importance. 'Wellington, according to this authority, is the, brightest business place:,in New and even there inquiries made of numbers of, business men elicitpd the reply that they were just' keeping'their heads above water. : An unmistakable outbreak of unemployed grievances.is,observable irir all iparts ofi the colony, and Ministers are being threatened with all kinds of penalties for not providing employment or at least food for the idle.
