Mr Maxwell states that he did not apply for compensations befbr,e <thu determination of the Cabinet was arrived at. He was, offered, and refused, compensation on Saturday before'he was actually aware that he,was not, to be retained He and Mr Hannay received' a letter 1 late on Saturday stating that'their services would not be required. Mr Maxwell then applied for and obtained compensation; The Commis sionew' engagement terminated yesterdayand. nut on the 27th as generally supposed, They had, therefore, only forty-eight hours, notice.
