KIRIKIRIROA ROAD BOARD.
Sir,—ln your issue-tf tHik' day^>a^correal pondent, signing himself IMA Ratepayer;?!' seems to think he has caught;the above Board f napi){w., { ge, says, .that-when, jthe, final .payment! if or A the Whangamiri* cmki| tract came before the Board it was decided to postponeuthe' payment until the next meeting of the Board, as they were 'satisfied that' the! measurements! were not correct,: and ,tbt they(resolye/l to have the work measured before any payment was made. goes ,011, to say, that at] the foiibwin'gmeetihgthe check measurement came before the Board'shiiwiog an error of 1300 yards'in' favour'iof the contractor.! iNowiLtbink if some people would make a little enquiry before they, rushed into print 'they''would 'save !, tnemßelves a, good deal of trouble, and I feel sure. had ; Mr< ,,! RatepVeV;te culars of the cM he would 'have'saved himself the trouble of writing such.a long letter. Now,* the facts of the case'arethese': At the, meeting of the,Board,pn Friday, No-, veniber'3rd, H ih'e engineer's final 'certificate' came bofore the Board,' dated the 30th October, andf of-, course ifrwouldfihaveibeeu paid WkWify "The Workmen and Contractor's, Lien Act," so that 'the balance due'coultf not be paid for 30 days. At the end of that time the contractor, of course, jwanted his imoney. I, as chairman, gave him an order, for the] payment, and also signed -the cheque, As to the Board having any t suspicion that the thing was never hinted!Stffitf Board, nor had I the slightest! rsuspityniUh'at the quantities were not.correct, or I certainly would not have gjyen the.order for ( the payment, notwithstanding " The Workmen and Contractor's Lien Act,""for, as far as I know,; the cutting had) hot! been checked' befoWthe payment waVrhade.-I pmy&c,,' ut: '; •'' '■"■*' Isaac'Co'ateb', 1 ,; ■•' Chairman Kirikiri'r'oa Road Board.
' TO THE EriTOB. '<- '■ ( Sir,—" Ratepayer's" letter in your last issue",is intended for'an underhandjthrust at the chairman.; It infers that, he paid the' contractor without i authority..',,' If " Ratepayer" had followed the, reports of the proceedings he would, not.have fallen into so glaring a mistake. ' 'As to* the check, measurement he refers 'to,'"Ratepayer", bas said too little or too much. A check' measurement mifcht have been considered necessary by some members of the Board, but was never brought.'iiD: at the meeting, and. I should say '■Ratepayer"-who appears to have been in their confidence—' has got a bit mixed, and, I again repeat, bas said too little or'too much.—Yours, etc., Settler.
