James' amendment to the Homo Rule Bill, declaring Imperial supremacy over Ireland, In committee in the House of Commons on the Bill, Clause 2, providing that with the exception and subject to the restrictions mentioned in the measure, there shall be granted to tho Irish Legislature the power to make laws for the peace, order, and good government of Ireland in respect of matters exclusively relating to Ireland or some part thereof, was carried. There was much disorder during the debate. The further consideration of the measure was adjourned till May 30. The discontent at the want of firmness of Mr Mellor, the Chairman of Committees, is increasing on all sides. May 18. Mr Joseph Chamberlain, speaking at Birmingham, declared that the country was awakening to tho fact that the general elections wore near at hand.
