EXCESSIVE RAINFALL.

An exceptionally heavy rain set in yesterday morning shortly after nine o'clock, and tho rain ciimo down in torrents until darkness set in. when it abated somewhat. The ground being already water-logged, owing to tho long-continued spell of wet weather we have been experiencing, the culvertf and drains were s.inn full, and tho wator backing np, all tho low-lying land in Hamilton on both sidea of tho river were submerged. The flat between Hood and Collingwood streets, on that portion tnvard Anglesea street, was coveied several inches deep, and temporary outlets bad tu be cut across the footpath in Hood-street bv Mr King to prevent his house from being flooded out, A potato-pit in his garden was flooded, about six or seven inches of water running through it, ami this will mean a monetary loss to Mr King.' On the eastern side of the river, between Firth-street and tho domain lands on the town belt, all tho allotments woro more or less covered, and the domain lands wero completely submerged, • There was considerable enquiry for tho foreman ot works in Hood-street, and much indignation expressed tlist he did not clean out tlio gratings of the Anglesca-strect drain, which were completely choked. These were subsequently cleaned out by .Mr T, King, acting under instruc-tions from Or, Sandes, and in the ourso of an hour or two the flood waters had run olf.

Captain Edwin telegraphed yesterday that thoro were indicitions of a gale with heavy rain from north to east and south east, with a further fall of the glass.
