CAMBRIDGE WEST.

The Mutual Improvement Society held their usual meeting on Friday evening. Since the meetings have been moved to the school the attendance has largely increased. The first number ot the journal of the Society was read, and reflected great credit on the members who contributed to it. The reading of it by the Editor—Mr H. R. Hyatt was listened to with marked attention, and much amusement was caused by the audienco guessing who the writers of the various articles were—most of the guesses being very wide of the mark. The advertisement*, cablegrams, locals, and R.M. Court news all proved a great source of fun ai they were all personal references to members, The contents were as follows :—(1.) Advertisements. (2.) Contributed article "On the Choice of a Wife," by Mr J. T. Hicks. (3.) Article on " Cruelty to Animals," Miss Rose Hicks. (4.) Original poetry, "Pitiless Poverty," Mr H. R. Hyatt. (5.) Cambridge West R.M. Court, Mrs Cudworth, R.M., on the Bench, assisted by Miss Tuck, J.P. (6.) Leading article on the " Educational Aspects of the Society," by the Editor. (7.) - Comments and local news. (8.) Table Talk, by a lady member. (9.) Article on " Vegetarianism," by Mr G. Comer, with a comment by the Editor. (10.) Cable and telegraph news. (11.) Correspondence on the "Tobacco Question," by Messrs G-. Northey, and T. A. Hicks. (12.) Essay, "The Ideal Man," by Miss Nickle. Besides the above, there were half-a-dozen other articles sent in which were held over for want of space, and which will be published as a special supplement in about a month's time. In replying to a vote of thanks, the Editor said that it was a pleasure and an honour to be connected with so useful and successful an institution, and hoped that nil would try to benefit by it. The membership of the Society now numbers over (iO. At the next meeting a lecture will be delivered by Mr H. R. on "Health."
