CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The above Council met on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. Webber), and Crs. Hally, Priestly, Kirkwood, Roberts, Moisley, IJocli and Bond. The minntesof the previous meeting were road and confirmed.

The Waikato Bridge.—The clerk of the Waipa County Council wrotn pointing out under what sections of "The Public Works Act " other local bodies might be made to contribute to the maintenance of the above bridge. He also asked what proportion of such contributions the Council would suggest should be paid by the neighbouring local bodies who at present do not contribute towards the maintenance. — The matter was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee to report upon at next meeting. Dr. Barnado.- Mr F. J. Brooks wrote asking the Council to remit the charge for the use of the Public Hall on the occasion of the visit of the deputation from Dr. Banardo's Homes.—Granted.—One councillor remarked that such a request would not be granted to any Cambridge institution.

The Bokough.—The Colonial Secretary advised the Council that the borough had been made subject to " The Public Bodies Powers Act 1887," and that the alteration had been duly gazetted. Finance.—There had been no meetjng of the Finance Committee. The following accounts were passed:—lnsurance on Public Hall, £5 8s 91, and H. Preece, surfaceman, £4.—Several otiier accounts were held over.

Committees.—Cr. Priestly wae appointed a member of the Lsgal and Finance Committee, and Cr. Kerr was elected to the YVorks Committee.

Fubze. —Cr. Kirkwood was authorised to have a quantity of furze cut down and a sranll bridge repaired at the east entrance to the Domain, on a portion of Albertstreet.

Half-holiday.—Cr. Bond apoke of the lon(?-talked-of half-holidny, and asked the Council to take the matter in hand. Hβ thought if the Council would appoint a committee to wait upon the storekeepers, a holiday would be granted. He moved a resolution to that effect, which was seconded by Cr. Kirkwood.—Cr. Bach thought it would never be carried out thoroughly, as there wore some storekeepers who kept open on Boxing-Day and New Year's Day on the nly, to the detriment of others.—Cra Priestly and Hally thought it out of the province of the Council as a body but that councillors might join together, outside the Council, and canvass the town with a view to getting a weekly half-holiday granted.—lt was resolved to nd'.pt thi* method. Absence.—The Town Clerk was absent from the meetinsr, and attention was called to the fact that the valuation roll bad to be completed by' Friday next. This concluded the business.
