WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.

Thk usual monthly meeting of tho Waikato County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Hiiinilton, at 2.30 p.m., yesterday. There were present: Crs. Priir.ro.se, (chairman), Seddon, Coates, Forrest and Johnston.

Poi.i.ino Pai.CK.— Mr W, Birss reported that he had obtained tho Huntly Hall as a polling place at a cost of 7s. Balanck Shkix—The Auditor-General wrote asking for a printed copy of the balance sheet up to 3lst March last, which had not as yet been forwarded. The clerk replied that tho balance sheet was published by it being publicly notified that it was open for inspection, and that he thought his letter of June of last year would have led liiin not to havo expected the printed return. AuniT Fkbs.—A notice similar to that sent to the other local bodies was.received from tho Audit Office, with reference to tho payment ot audit fees. The matter was deferred to next meeting. Tlllitn.-i.— I The Ltnds Department having written, stating that the place indicated on which it is intended to spend the " thirds" accruing from deferred lands would hot directly benefit the sections from which the money is derived, tho Clerk was instructed to reply that the Council were of opinion that the place indicated was the best pine; in their opinion, on which to spend this money, and if it did not suit the department, perhaps t'ley might propose some place where it would be more beneficial. Ckossino. —The Railway authorities wrote with reference to the crossing asked for by Mr Collins, that Mr Collins wants the crossing 10 chains away from the place whero the present road crosses, but they could put one down half a chain away. If the Council would deviate the road to where Mr Collins wishes the crossinc, and closo the present one, he would forward tho application to Wellington for consideration. Tho Clerk was instructed to writo to Mr Collins, statins that they will make the. deviation if he will pay the expense. Tksdkiis.— Several tenders were received for the works oil the Great South road between Tole's Hill and Ohinewai and with reference to this work the engineer wrote : —I specified tho formation to be twentyfive feet wide and to be placed in the. middle of tho road. I find now th.it the telegraph posts are thirty feet from the side pegs. Pleaso authorise lne to write and a<k the Department to shift, their posts !o within a few feet of tho side line. Not being able to run the formation of the present traffic road I am afraid tho work will be a more expensivo one. than we at first thought owing to tho quantity -.if furze, etc., ou the roadway.—-The Clerk was instructed to authorise Mr Sandes to write and a-d; that these posts bo removed by next meeting.— Cr. Forrest moved that owing to it beins found that tho telegraph posts are on the line of road that the tenders be returned and fresh tenders called for next meeting.— Seconded bv Cr. Seddon and carried.

ENCKOACIiiNr.. — Cr. Johnson reported that Mr Young has fenced a portion of the Wairangi road which was encroaching on his property. He had therefore had some work done in clearing, s i as lo nr-lmitof the passage of tho present trallic, and at an eaily date the Council would have to make a rather cotl in;;. Accoi'N r.-'. —The 1 ialanee-sheet as audited was read. -- Payment of tlie following accounts was authorised. — I''. J. Johnson, £1 10s: J. I'orrest I(Js, co.sts 18s ; petty cash, t'l 7s 101: Hansen, £1 18s; \V. Birss, £2 Ills ; 11. Wolter. £3 8s :A. Kiddy, £5 12s Od ; D. Urnce, £2: A. Smith. Kls J. J'Maniiran, i'l lis; engineer, £1 3s lid; salary, £12 10s. Thanks.—Cr Johnson thanked the members of the Council for their assistance in carrying out the woiks in the Rangiriri riding, and also Capt. McPherson for tlie prompt attention to all matters connected with tho Council. Cr Johnson on behalf of the members thanked tho Chairman for tho very able and courteous manner iu which he had carried out the duties of his oHice during the. many years he has filled the chair. In rising to reply, Mr Primrose said that if he had done anything t<. deserve, the. favour, it had been done by the, able help ho had had from an active and energetic Council, and he said he thought that they had worked the County as well as it could be worked. Although one of the oldest Councils in the district, they had never struck a County rate, and their roads had not sulferod from this. A good deal of the work was taken over by tho Road Boards, and no doubt they found that advantageous as it saved doable rating. Ho again thanked the uiembTs for their vote of thanks. The Chairman proposed a vote of thanks to Capt. McPherson for the able and ellicient maimer in which he had carried on the work of fho Council. Seconded by Cr. Foi rest and carried unanimously.
