A GRIEVANCE.

TO TUB EDITOR. Sir,— Will you allow me a small space in your valuable paper to call the attention of tho public to a standing grievauce here in Whatiiwhata. As 'a rule, we are a longsuffering people, but even Balaam's ass spoke when required, and it is so with me. Outside the Post-oflice the two roads meet, tliti Hoad Board has ono portion anil the Council the main road. The slightest rain floods both, and then there is no egress from the office, and at present, whilst I am writing, we might as well be on tho side of Lake Taupo. This will be a pool of stagnant water for three or four days, even when the ram ceases. I havo called the attention of the chairman of the Road Board to it, and also our member of the Council, but neither have taken any steps So rectify it. One says it is on the county road, and the other that the Council has no funds. It would only cost a few pounds to drain it, and I have paid rates regularly for fifteen years. lam sure that if there were a .sauitory inspector here it would bo rectified. No wonder tho Whatawhata people are sufferers with such drainage as at present exists. Wo had better roads IS7 years ago, whun the luxuries of County Councils and Road Boards woro unknown.—Yours truly, A Ratepayer.

P.S.— To make matters worse, the engineer will not allow us to take sand from tho county roads, so that we cannot even improve it ourselves. If it got* much worse we might utilise it by erecting bath* on it, and'call their "The Post-otficu Baths."
