Ix consequence of the reductions made in the defence vote, the scheme for the organisation of the volunteer force will probably deferred, and the establishment of a partially paid force will certainly bo postponed. The legal general knowledge exrivmnauous which begin to-day, will bo under the control of the New Zealand University instead of the Judges of the Supreme Court as heretofore. The equinoctial gales which set in yesterday with some violence, were accompanied by a number of waterspouts, which burst on the shore near Island Bay, Negotiations are going on for the purpose of bringing forward the date of the Wi.itaker-Hutchison action to a day in next month. An otter has been made by the plaintiff and is now under consideration. It. is stated Mr Hutchison applied to the Speaker for a protective order under the Parliamentary Privileges Act, 1863, with reference to extracts from his speech which had been distributed outside the House, but the speaker refused. The Hon. G. 11.I 1 . Richardson will go south to-morrow if possible. BoMi the Hons. Hislop and Mitchelsou are thinking of leaving Wellington this week if possible.
