IE AWAMUIU.

Tuns CoMMISSIONKKs. —Tho biennial election uf Commissioners of the Te Awamulu Town Board took place on the Bth iiist. Mr T.Sibley presided as returning oflicer at the nomination, Messrs James Walton, ,1. B. Teasdalo, G. M. A. Ahicr, T. .1. Rogers anil Win. North members of tlu old Board being returned unopposed. These gentlemen gave much satisfaction as Town Councillors in tho past and the people of this town have thus shown their gratitude and confidence by re-electing them. Doubtless thy Hoard will adopt a wise and progressive policy, and endeavour to infuse a spiiitof hope and advancement into their tellow townsmen. If I might be allowed to suggest some matters, which urgently need attention in Te Awaniutu, on the part of the town fathers, 1 should point out the desirability, in the lir.it iilace, of their seeing that tile river or stream flowing through the lower part of the town is not polluted by being made the receptacle of every kind of garbage and refuse, including surface drainage, dead dogs, eats, and debris of vaiious kinds, which decaying and contaminating the water of this line stream (which is used for domestic purposes by several of tho inhabitants in the vicinity of the rivci) must cause many diseases, and become a serious nuisance. Besides, should this be allowed to continue, the ill affects of these impurities in the water must become in the course of time a great evil to the farmers and settlers through whose land the river flows below the town. This stream, with care and a little engineering skill and expense, might bo made tho source of a first-class water supply. That the health and cleanliness of the ueople, and the security of property from fire, would be greatly enhanced by this being done cannot be denied. I hope these matters will not be overlooked by tho town commissioners. A New Cismkteiiy.— It will soon bo necessary to provide a new place of sepulture for "this town, in view of tho fact that the cemetery at. St. John's Church is gradually being filled up. 1 think that tho local authorities would do well to look to this matter in time, and any reserve, if they have such, should be carefully husbanded, and not leased for tou long a period. If they have no such reiser vo thev should cipeedily get one. By securing one now they would avoid, through land being so low in price, a, heavy untlay to the townspeople in the future.

Pl'llUC Do.UUN ANP G.UiDKN fois Tk Awamutu.— I This is even now felt to be a want, and must continue to be so as time rolls on. I would therefore suggest, respectfull}', to the Commissioners and townfolk that they should, if they have a reserve for this purpose quickly set about, laying it out and planting it, and if they have 110 such reserve, they should take vigorous steps to securo a suitable grant from the Government. The now town board of Kihikihi, with their energetic chairman, Mr James Farrell will, I understand, set about laying out and improving the very fine reserves—which the wisdom of the original designers of that town, took good care to endow it with for tho above purposes, The Fuii/.e Nuisanck. -This is here, as elsewhere, in Waikato, a great pest, and an unsightly and even a dangerous thing. To see tiie roads near the mill and it, other parts of the town district overgrown to a considerable extent with furze, one would supposo the plant was considered ail ornament to the place. The overgrowth of this prickly nuisance is the result of slovenliness, and now that legislation has been provided for enforcing, I commend its eradication also to the notice of the now town board.
