LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WEDNESDAY. Thk Council met nt 2.30. Mr Shrimski drew attention to certain speeches made by two Resident Magistrates of Christchurch at the meeting of the Civil Service Association. The Attorney-General said that he saw nothing objectionable in the speeches and recognised the right of the Civil Service to combine for their own protection. It was resolved on the motion of Sir F, Whitaker that Government business take precedence fur the rest of the session, so that Dills could be passed through all stages nL one sitting. The Hallways Construction and Land Act ISBI Amendment Bill was rejected on its second reading ty eight to fourteen. The Gold Duty Abolition and Mining Property Rating Bill was road a second time on the voices. The Council adjourned till 7.30 p.m. The Council resumed nt 7.30. Sir V. Whitaker gave notice that an address be presented to Her Majesty, a>king that Macquarrie Island be annexed to New Zealand instead of Tasmania. The Mining Company's Act Amendment Bill, the Post and Telegraph Act Amendment Bill, and the Coal Mines Act Amendment Bill, were read a second time. The Council adjourned at 5.35.
