SHEEP-STEALING CASE.
At the Police Court, Hamilton, on Tuesday, before Messrs Steele and Kuox, .T.l's. James McCabe wiu-i brought up, charged with stealing a sheep, the property of the Bank of New Zealand, from the Richmond J (owns Estate, on the 14th of August. Accused pleaded "' not guilty." Constable Murray, who conducted tho ])rosecutioii, brought evidence to show that the she.ep killed was the property of the Bank, us it was of the same brand a< the flock, and also that the sheep would not have pone whors the remains were found, if it hud not been driven. No evidence was given showing that the accused had killed the sheep, and the bench decided that the evidence was insufficient to commit him, so the case was dismissed. The same prisoner was then charged with being a. vagrant and having no visible means of support.— lien. Tyrel deposed that he had known the accused fur over 20 years and had not knowii him tn huve dono any work at all. He said McCube was in the habit of tramping about the country begging, and that he was entirely dependent on charity for his living.—Constable Murray deposed that in the house where accused lived there was no food, bed, or article of furniture, the place being quite bare.—Tho Bench sentenced the prisoner to two months' imprisonment with hard labour, and recommended that he should be examined by a doctor as they thought he was inoro a subject for an asylum than a prison.
