WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.
Thk monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council was held in the. Council Chambers Ohaupo, at 11 a.m., on Tuesday. There were present: Crs Lang (Chairman), Smith, Anderson, Dawson, Toasdale and Hunter. Mr A. Armstrong, county engineer, was also in attendance. Enginerhs' Rktokt. —The Engineer in his monthly report Rtated that the contractor for contract No 114. the drain near Mr Hall's place, was late in commencing his work. He recommended that tenders should be called for a piece of formation on the Te Rore road, and for reforming and gravelling about 30 chains of the Ohaupol'aterangi road near Mr Myers'. He reported that the following persons had nn', cleared the furze on the roadst lj u ning their properties, in compliance withii otices given by the Council:—Mr Williamson on [he Ohaupo-Hamilton road, Mesari Bryant, and Gage on the Kihikihi-Te Awamutu road, and the owners of the Beerescourt property on the Hamilton-Ngaruawahia road. Refenine to a paragraph which appeared in The Waikato Times re the condition of the appioaches to the Whatiwhatihoe bridge, he stated that this work is under the control of the Survey Department, and that he had written to the Chief Surveyor calling his attention to the matter. The Engineor was authorised to call for tenders to be in at the next meeting
for the works recommended in his report, and the Clerk was instructed to give formal notice to the. persons mentioned by the Engineer as not having complied with the notice to clear furze, and also to Mr K. Morrison. Alexandra.—Mr W. J. Smith wrote re furze on tho streets and on the reserve near Mrs Anbin's at Alexandra, and also to the state of the approaches to the Whatiwhatihoe bridge. It was decided to have the furze cleared, and the other matter mentioned by Mr Smith was dealt with in the Engineer's report. Stoats and Weasels.—ln reply to a letter from the Clerk asking him to protest against the introduction of stoats and weasels, Hon J. Bryce wrote as follows : •'ln Committee of Supply a few days ago, I strongly laid the views of the Wuipa County Council on this subject before the House, b'.it without avail r.s the item was passed. I am bound to say that very strong evidence was adduced by other members as to tho Wilue of these animals in the destruction of rabbits, and without pretending to have much knowledge on the subject myself, I am disposed to think that th'i.v established their case." Funds.—The following statement of riding accounts for period ending September 9th, 181)0, was presented by tho Engineer.—Newcastlo Riding : Amount of vote, £34 ; amount spent to date, £2110; 8s OdA ; debit from last allocation. £22 lls ; total expenditure to date. £28210s !)d ; overspent, £248 IDs od. Pukekura : Amount of vote, £89; amount spent to date, £8!) Is Id ; debit from last allocution, £330 "h iidn; total expenditure, £410 (is (»d; n\erspent, £330 Us lid. Mangapiko: Amount of v.ito, £92 ; amount spent, £157 4s 3d ; debit trom last allocation, £12 10s 2d; total expenditure, £80 3s 3d ;t» expend, £11 lfis 7d. Rangiaobia: Amount of vote, £93; amount spent, £04 os 3d; debit from last allocation, £14 4s Id ; total expenditure, £108 9s 0d ; overspent, £l-"> its od. A includes £193 12s 7d for rebuilding Ohote Creek Bridge; u includes, £240 4s 3d for rebuilding Walker's Gully bridge. The Clerk reported that the overdraft now stood at £274 Is 4d.
Slaughterhouses.— Tho Commissioner of Police wrote, stating that the duty of the police, as laid down in the Act, is to take steps to enforce the Act after tho Council have taken the initiative, but in the case at Ngaruawahia it was not the place for the police to uct. The Clerk said that it would not bo necessiry to tako any
legal proceedings as all the butchers were complying with tho Act. Sujjuriks.—The engineer was instructed to get n fence erected at Heather's Creek when the furze has been cut down ; also to get the odd branches of furze a'omit the roads cut down, and to effect any necessary repairs and have the watertables cleaned out on the road from Kusabs' to the Alex andra turn off. Payments.—The following accounts were passed for payment: —T. Brennan, £2; W. Patnu, £1 15s ; Gastletou and Carsons, £5 ; G. Way, £1 !)s 6d ; T. W. Maunder, 14s 2d; Fletcher and Viekers, £12 4s; W. Cowley, £2 i>3 Gd ; R. Cunningham, £2 11s lid ; Kihikihi Town District Board, ISs fid ; engineer, £11 10s 2d ; petty cash, £3; clerk, £S ; Hospital Board, £50 Is 3d. This was all the business.
