CAMBRIDGE BAND UF HOPE.

The monthly meeting of the newly-formed Band of Hope was held in the Oddfellows Hall, Cambridge, on Monday evening. The Rev. C. H. Garland presided, and read the programme, consisting of 14 items, that it was intended should have been given, but unfortunately 10 of the performers were suffering from the prevailing epidemic. The proceedings opened with a hymn, after which Miss Martha Sharp and Miss Lizzie Moisley sang a duet. Mr Geo. Henson then gave his experience as a total abstainer, which extended over half a century, and now at the age of 72 he found himself as hale and hearty as many young men of twenty. Mr F. J. Brooks followed with a neat speech, after which the Rev. W. Evans delivered ono of his characteristic addresses. The Chairman then spoke on the cause of temperanco in an interesting and yet forcible manner. He referred to the way in which savage nations neglected the aged and weak, leaving them to die and sometimes even killing them ; he contrasted that with the treatment accorded them by civilised communities, who erected hospitals ana refuges for the aged and decrepit, and a'wiiys helped the weak. Was it not therefore' their duty to help the weaker brethren who could not abstain from taking so much strong drink that it ruined their health and unfitted them from taking their proper station in life. At the conclusion of the Chairman's address several adults signed the pledge. The evenings entertainment was concluded by a capital recitation by Miss Gerty Brooks.
