MARKET KEPOHT3. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile A'eney Company report as under :— Melkoursh, May 11. —A considerable b'nincu has been done in wheat since the issue of mir last weekly report, pi ices indicating considerable firmness and improving at clo.se. About 50,000 bags have been sold, mainly to millers, but one or two parcels lmvo been taken for export, The improved demand, though looked for to occur »t the turn of the year, was accelerated by the rise in the London market, and though prised there have not as yet advanced to leave a margin of profit at current rata: of freight, atill a litttle has been done on the prospect of a further rise. The latest transaction is a, parcol of 2000 b»{,'s, purchased at 3s O'.d, f.0.h., to go forward by the berth ship, Liehtfhiel, at freight of 20s per ton, which la equal to Ills lOd per 180 lbs., inclusive of charges, insurance, etc. The rise in the English market may be traced to the shorter crops in India and America, and the uncertain season. The latest sales are for off-coast cargoes of Victorian wheat, 3Gs per 480 lbs ; rfonth Australian, 30s 3d to 30s Od, but cable messages state that the market has an upward tendency. An opportune break in the weather will enable farmers to proceed with their ploughing, but some districts sowings this season will be late, whilst indifferent reports from the Guulburn Valley and North-Eastern districts are to hand.—Oats : A better bu>inessdone in stout qualities, and some good lines of milling qualities, New Zealand growth, sold. Not much change in feed lots. To-day wo placed a few lots of stout at 2s t)d to 2s lOd. Quote Calcuttas at Is !)d to 2s ; Algerian to 2s 3d ; thin Tartarians 23 5d to 2s Od ; Now Zealand heavy milling, 3s Id. . DUNRDIN, May 22.— drain.— W heat ; A quietor tone has prevailed during the week, only a limited business having transpired. With the exception of prime Tuscan, for which there is still a good demand, there is less inquiry for all other descriptions of milling, doubtless due to the fact that millers have in the umntimo secured sufficient for their requirements during the next few weeks at any rate. Parcels could be placed for shipment, if in suitable condition, and at prices in .sympathy with those ruling at Home, but holders having an opinion that prices are more likely to harden, are not disposed to quit at those lately current.' Medium quality is very difficult to place at a satisfactory 'price. A modeiately fair demand exists for fowl wheat, but prices demanded preclodo very much being disposed of. We quote best. Tuscan, Ms Id to 3s fid ; medium to good, 3s M to 3s 3d ; best red straw and velvet, 3s to 3s 2d ; medium to Rood, 2s tfd to 2s IOJ ; inferior to medium, 2s3d U)2s7d (ex stovo, sacks weighed in, terms).—Oats': A moderately fair amount <jf business lias been transacted during the past week on the of last reported quotations, but, owing to the bulk of the consignments now coming forward being held for higher prices, it would be difficult to secure large linos of cither fee 1 or milling, except, at an advance on prices tatc.lv our rent. The ipunl.ii.y of prime bright mdiing is very imn-'u shoi I of what might reasonably he expected, c.in-i.lering the favourable season; f.|iree-f..ui ■i.hs of the samples presented .-.now Mens of In ing badly harvested. While a fair demand exists, we have no improvement to note in value*, which we Hive as before, vu. :—For stout bright milling, Is l.'i i to Is od ; be-t short feed, Is 3Utols~4d; medium, Is 3d to Is 3.W ; inferior, Is to Is 2.W (ex store, sacks extra). Dairy Produce—There is no frebh feature of r.r>v importance to be noted in the position of the market. Shipments of cheese continue to be made both to London and Australia on a liberal scale, and ero long stocks will bo reduced to a very small compass. Prime salt butter enlv commands any attention, and is ea.-.ily disposed of at about 8d per lb; medium to inferior can hardly be placed at any price. (JtllU.-iTCUUUUII, May 23.—Wheat: The market remains (inn at the level of last week's quotations. Buyers are not disposed to increase their limits, and sellers are divided in opinion as to whether to accept ruling rates, or ship Home on their uwu account. Wo quot» :—Tuscan, 3s to 3s Jd ; Pearl, 2s lOd to 2s 1 Id ; Hunter s, 2s •M, f.0.b., sacks extra. Oats display no movement whatever, and the position is rather weaker, if any change can bo noted. "Very few holders aro disposed to accept prices offered, and in the face of heavy stocks, and the low rates prevalent in tho South, buyers cannot proll'or any advance. Most of tho season's yield still remains in first hands. Wo quote milling, Is '(A to Is Sd ; stout feed, is 5d to Is Od ; ordinary, Is ■Id, cost ex store and sacks to be added. Potatoes: A fair amount of trade is being done at the prices last quoted, viz., 35s per ton at country stations, sacks extra, though many growers are holding off in the hope of better value being obtained later on. Dairy produce : Butter of first quality remains scarce, and good makers can ootain 7Ad to 8d per lb ; inferior is more difficult to place at a considerable reduction. Cheese has little enquiry at to 4d por lb.
