Turner only took two wickets at the cost of | 4!) runs, Forris four for a similar number, . and Lyons three for 34. The fielding of the Australian team was splendid, especially J that of Trott at point. He was repeatedly ! cheered by the spectators for his dashing , work in that position. When play ceased for the day the Aus- . tra'ians had lost four wickets for 10(3— Barrett 37, Murdoch 40, Trott not out 23. May 23. In the match with Surrey, the Australians, at the fall of the fifth wicket, had made 180 runs. The Australians' first innings closed for 278. Walter was not out with 53. He batted in faultless style, and was at tho wicket upwards of three hours. Blackham knocked tip his score of 75 in one hour. It includes fourteen boundary hits. Ho gave two chances, both difficult ones. Surrey tried seven bowlers, the best being Sliarpe, who secured five wickets for 52 runs. In their second innings Sutrey made IoG, the principal scorers being Shuter and Wood, each 33, Maurice Reid 2!). The fielding of the Australians was very good. Lyons took five wickets for 58 runs, Ferris four for (55. Turner was tried, but did not come off. The Australians require 79 runs to win. Thirteen thousand were present at the match to-day, May 24. The Australians defeated Surrey by eight wickets. Lyons played a dashing innings tor 24. Both Trott and Murdoch carried out their bats for 30 and 17, respectively.
