SHEEP WORRYING AT WHATAWHATA.
A good many of the settlers in and around Whatawhata have'for soma time past been suffering from the depradations of dogs amongst their flocks, On Sunday Mr Bruce, living at Maungakowai heard dogs amongst his sheep and was fortunate enough to get within gun-shot of one of the delinquents, and succeeded in shooting him. Subsequently it was found that the dog belonged to Mr A Crawford of Whatawhnta, who, when shown the animal, at once admitted the ownership, and expressed his satisfaction that the animal had paid the penalty. This was quite a young dog, and he had evidently been led away bv bad company, as the real culprit, a much older dog, although seen at the same time and equally guilty, managed to keep out of range. We arc sorty to hear that eight sheep were found dead, and no doubt many others are maimed. The law empowers the 'owner of sheep to shoot or destroy in any way dogs seen amongst.his fluck, and in the event of any sheep being killed or injured, to sue the owner of such dog or dogs for the value of tho same.
