TE AROHA
Town Board Election.—'The election for the Board of Commissioners took place on Tuesday, and caused some little excitement. The result was eagerly waited for, as it was felt that it would decide the question as to whether the To Aroha ratepayers were satisfied with the town district form of government, or would favour the change of adopting the Municipal Corporations Act. Five candidates were selected as pledged to support the latter, and were returned by large majorities. The result as below will show that a more unanimous opinion was held on the subject than at last contest, when four out of five similarly pledged were returned. Edward Gallagher, 97; Geo. Lipsey, !)(i; Joseph Heathcote, 77; James Mills, 73 ; George Ebert, 73. The defeated candidates were: Arthur Downes, 40; John Ilolt, Editor of the Te Aroha and Ohinemuri News, 45; John Allen D.ibson, 37. The announcement by ths Returning Officer, Mr J. W. Murray was greeted with loud cheers. Mr Gallagher and Mr Heathcote briefly returned thanks to the electors, and proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the Returning Officer. The proceeding were conducted throughout with the utmost good humour.
