The weakness of the Home Secretary, Mr Matthews, is also blamed. A French steamer collided with an Italian steamer near the Canary Islands. The latter lost ninety lives. Yellow fever is raging in Florida and a panic has ensued. A sudden attack by Osinan Digna's cavalry on Suakim was repulsed by the garrison, the enemy suffering some loss. A company, with a capital of ■£3,000,000, has been formed to pur clwse the Cheshire saltfields. The popular,ion of Ireland lias decreased 37,000 during the June quarter. After the murder of Major Barttelot the expedition returned to Stanley Falls. Mr W. Redmond, M.P., has been sentenced to three month's imprisonment for conspiracy. The Rev. P. Slattery lias been appointed a Commissary of the Provincial Branch of the Franciscan Order for Australia, and sails in October.
