The matter had been so thoroughly canvassed that it was unnecessary for hiin to go into details. —Cr. Johnson seconded the motion, on the ground that the matter ought not to have been brought up at the council at ail.—Or. Runciman said he quite agreed with the motion. Since the last meeting he had had an opportunity of ascertaining that the parties interested were prepared to come to an arrangement privately.—Cr. Graham said his opinion always was that the. matter was of a private nature, and should have been settled privately.—The Chairman said the matter had certainly not come before the council as a private matter; the ostensible object was the widening of the Cambridge road. —Cr. Smith said that was merely a subterfuge.— The motion was then put and carried, the chairman refraining from voting. The Churchill Punt.—'The District Surveyor wrote, stating that the mint was now completed, and asked the council to take it over in accordance with an agreement made by the chairman.—Cr. Mr Brooks was the only person so far who had used if. It was of no use to settlers in the WaikatoCounty. —The Chairman said the punt would be of great value to some people, and as there was no local body 011 the other side of the river it would not have been erected had the council refused to take charge of it. He, of course, understood Mr Brooks would take charge of it, otherwise the council could lock it up. He would suggest that the council take over the punt and give it into Cr. Johnson's care. After some further discussion it was resolved that Cr. Johnson take over the punt and lock it up, so that the first move might be made by the parties interested. Dog Tax. —Mr H. Fitzgerald wrote complaining that though he had been appointed sub-registrar of dogs for the Cambridge riding the council had subsequently appointed Mr D. Lees.
