PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, TE AWAMUTU. Annual Gathering.
The: annual tea meeting and concert in connection with the Presbyterian Church, was held in the Public Hall, on Friday evening. There was a counter attraction at Kihikini, where a social re-union wusheld tho same evening, and this took a good number away who would otherwise have been at the entertainment. Tea was on the table at half-past six p.m., the tables being provided by the ladies of the various districts. Before sitting down to tea the hymn "Praise God from whom all blesaings flow " was sung. After tea a pianoforte solo, "March Celeste" was played by Miss Maggie Hodgson. The Rev. J. S. Smalley then returned thanks. The tables having | been cleared the platform wan erected, and tile entertainment was begun by the chairman, Rev. B. Hutson, giving an address, reviewing the work of the past year. The following programme was then carried out. Song, "Sailing," Mr Rigg; duet, "What are tho wild waves saving," Miss Macky and Mr R. Kay ; address by Rev. J. S. Smalley ; song, "The gallants of England," Mr W. Mandeno ; pianoforte solo, "Bohemian Girl," Miss Mary Sturgess; son", "Nancy Lpe," Mr IWdekin ; address, Mrs Donald ; duet, " Tired," Miss Seabourne and Mr Boyiie ; pianoforte duet, "The great Globe," the Misses Sturgeus; uddrcsn, Rev. J. J. Hither; duet, "'The minute-gun at ben," Messrs Ger matin and R. Kay ; duct, " Beware," Miss Seaborn ne and Mr Boyne. After a vote of thanks to the ladies who provided tho trays had been proposed by Mr Sherrctc, one to the performers by the chairman, the usual vote to the chair by Mr Germann, and the benediction, the people dispersed. Mi«s Mandeno, Miss Macky, and Miss Seabourne played the various accompaniments. The singing was marred by the piano being out of tune ; it is veiy badly in need of Mining. The fact of its being kept 1 in a building that nc^cr has a fire in if, and ami until recently in .a rt imp and lftaky [ condition i> sufficii'iit to account for ifc< being out ol tun- 1 . It ihouH bo .Utenderi to every time a tuner visit» the district. >In the course of his address, Mr Mather said a good many people were out of sorts owing to climatic influences ; he said something of the sort must be the matter with tho piano, for it was simply execrable, a statement which was fully endorsed by the audience. Tho Rev. Mr Sinalloy made a good impression on tho people by his address. Like Mr Mather, he was very happy in rolatin? anecdotes suitable to his discourse. His language was well chosen, and I his stylo of delivery pood. Doubtless his mission services hero will be well attended. The proceeds will leave a credit balance of £10.— (Own Correspondent.)
