HOSPITALS AND CHARITABLE AID.

rOTllh KIH I OK. The amount to be paid by Hamilton, Waip.i, Waikiito and Raglan on a population basin for the whole district for Hospitals and Charitable Aid combined would bo about £1000, *■ against £1142 now demanded, so that the difference is not so \ery great, wherein in the ci>e of Puko on n population basis they would only be asked for £108 as ag.unst £1133 required of them under the present syitem ; and Th.unp- buroueh and county would luve to tinrl £17ii7 in lieu of 8*)02, »<> no doubt they will nuke a hud fight .ifj.nnst the separation of Piako from their district. So much for the method of levying thp rat", which is a matter that must he dealt with by legislation if any alteration from the present method is lequired. The great point for consideration to my mind is the erection of the counties above mentioned and the Borough of Hamilton into a separate district, and to this end all our energies should be devoted. A hospital could easily be provided and kept q ring, sufficient for all our requirements, at a very moderate cost, and funds would have to be provided for paying for any old people we might send to the refugeH or for uny children committed or admitted to any of the various homes existing in Aucklaud or elsewhere, but beyond this the country districts should not be asked to go. Why should our lands, already sufficiently taxed, bo a«ked to bear the burden of suppot ting a large number of poor who nßver became poor in our midst, and with whom we really have no connection whatever?

The absurdity of the present Act is well exemplified in the case of the Piako and Waikato counties, where the bubsidy, payable under the L«c ll Pouer.s and Fin.inc. 1 Bill, is absolutely les» than the demand made by the board, so th.it, by IofuMUR to pay up when called on, thoy make a Rain. As the subject will, however, be discussed thoroughly on Thursday, and my time is limited, I will write no more at present.— I am, Sir, yours truly, T. G. Sandes.
