LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS. [BY TELEGRAPH.-PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Friday.

Wellington, Friday. In connection with the statement of the London Times that New Zealand proposed to borrow only one million and a-half this year, the Government state that the amount which will be required has not been settled. They, however, think the statement may have been published on the authority of the Agent-General, who probably informed The Times that not more than one million and a-half will be required this year. At a meeting of the Cabinet this afternoon it was decided to recommend His Excellency the Governor that the New Zealand war medal be awarded to Col. McDonnel and Capt. Gilbert Mair for services in the Maori war. The Colonial Secretary leaves for Auckland this evening in the Te Anau, and will be accompanied by Mr Cooper, Undersecretary. A case of tuberculosis is reported from Wairarapa, and a veterinary surgeon has been despatched to report on the case. At the annual meeting of the Harbour Board this afternoon, the chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, said it was gratifying to the board to observe that work on the wharves during the year had resulted in a profit of £5010, or an increase of £2000 on that of the previous twelvemonths. He expressed an opinion that bpfore long the Board would be in a position not only to provide increased accommodation, but also to lower the rates. Letters were read from the local agent of the direct steamer companies stating that it was their intention to take legal advice with reference to tho action of the Board in asking for a return of wool dumping charges. The Premier received a telegram from the Agent-General this morning, intimating that the French Government intends to transport 100 convicts at an early date to the Isle of Pines. The Native Minister leaves for Wanganui to-morrow morning.
