COMING OVER TO THE "KINc" A document ha* been received at Whattuhatihoe this last week, addressed to T.iwhiao from the vaiiou-. Thames tribes and the Xgatihaun, containing' 1843 signatures, tho writers pledging themselves to hand over their respective lands to Tawhi.io. Another to the same effect has been sent to Tawhiao from Ngatin am'apoto, the number of signatures to which I did not learn.
THK NATIVES ANIJ THE CKNBUB. The enumerators employed in taking the census of the natives have had no easy task in thih diiection in obtaining the necessary information. A great proportion of the natives could not or would not see why tin' Uo\ eminent wanted this information. .Some of them were of opinion that the Government only required to know their numbers so as to estimate how many boldieis would be required to kill them all. ( )thers were sure by their seeking to know the extent of their possession* that it whh only preparatory to taxing them. Most of them reqviired from 5s to £1 fur their signatures.
THE KAWHIA ROAD. Quite a number of natives are now employed earning an honest penny in forming the Hikurangi Kawhia road. The work ii let out in small contract 4 *, of which Mr Redman h.is the supervision. Mr Je#>e Sage, the contractor for the erection of small bridges and culverts on the same road, will shortly proceed to carry out his contract. The work has been delayed in consequence of arranging for fencing through native cultivations that the road passes through. — (Own Correspondent, Bth March.)
