TE AROHA. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Te Aroha, Monday. A well-attended meeting was held at Haywood's Te Aroha Club Hotel (formerly the British) for the purpose of making arrangements to form a racing jclub for this district. The need for some such institution hns long been recognised by lovers of the sport, aud at the meeting in question the wish was generally expressed that the matter "hould at once take shape. It was therefore unanimously resolved that a club be formed, to be styled the Te Aroha Jockey Club, and that it be registered under the Auckland Jockey Club rules. Another meeting to complete the arrangements will be held in tho Palace Hotel on Thursday nest, when the usual office-bearers and a strong committee will be appointed. The forthcoming meeting in March will be carried out under the auspices of the newlyformed club, and every effort will be used to make it the most successful that has yet beou held here. The plans prepared by Mr H. Crump for now buildings at the baths, and forwarded to Wellington sometime since, have at last been approved of by the authorities there, and tenders are now invited by the domain board for the respective works. These will be vigorously pushed on, so that they may bp available for use bnfore the expiration of the present season. The steadily increasing number of visitors renders additional bathing accommodation necessary, and the new springs which are now about to be utilised will, it is expected, afford sufficient to meet all requirements for a time. The appearance in the newspapers of advertisements calling for tenders for the erection of buildings for the railway station is noted here with satisfaction, as showing a desire to fulfil the promise recently made by the Minister for Public Works with regard to the speedy opening of the line. From the shortness of the period between the day fixed for receiving tenders and the time when, it has been stated, trains will commence to run, it may be inferred that the buildings will not be of a very pretentious character, but the public will be too glad to have through communication by rail under any circumstances to cavil muoh at a small matter of this kind. Some attention has at last been given to the requirements of the Waiorongomai people in the matter of street improvements. Residents there have had much cause to complain of the indifference to their wants displayed both by the county council and the board of governors of the Thames High School, for in paat winters vehicular communication with the town has been almost impossible owing to the abominable condition of thetnain approach. Tenders are now called for by the council for repairs to Kilgour, street, and it is to be hoped that the work about to be begun will be ooutlnued until the whole length of the road from the turn-off to the township will be put into proper condition for traffic during the next winter. Improvements are also projected on the Shaftesbury road and some small contracts for works near tho Gordon settlement are about to be let, Some heavy showers of rain fell here <n Friday, but since then tfie weather h»s been about as hot as before. The creeks *ja again quite low and a much more continuous fall is required to give a Btart to mining operations.
