TEAWAMUTU.

Thk members of tfie \V'eslo\an Church hold a soiree in honour of the :unv<il ot the Rev. Mr M.itluM, the new minister. The trays weio pi elided over by the ladies of the congi elation. After tea the tiall was cleaud, when a pingraintne of song-, and speeches was carried out. Mr J. \V. Bridgni.in was voted tuthc chair, and gave a shoit addiess. He enlaiged on the necessity of ho.aty eo-opji ation b»t\veun the congregation and the inini-.ter if they desired the wnik nf tin 1 chiucli to be a Hiicce-iK, and lie CApiessed tlio hoy? that | the Te Awainntu and other Wehleynn congregations would give tlie minuter fullest support. Song, " Death of Nelson,' Mr Creamer ; song, " Better Bide a Wee," MibS Mackay ; nddiess by Key Ml IJellow ; song, "Our Jack's Oome Home To-day," Mi (i. Hunter. The Key. Mr Hutsou then delivered an addiess, giving a Welcome to tlu now minister. Song, " Wings," Miss. Maundeno; song, Mr (J. Hunter ; address by Key Mr M.itlier ; song, Mis> Stunner The m-eting closed with the doxology. The evenings entcitamment was a success in every respect ; the amount to credit after paying accounts is £7. The Kov Mr Mather was highly pleased with the evident c,ndiihty of the welcome extended to him, by other denominations an well an his own. Themenibeift of the new ly-elected Rangiaohia Highway Bo.ud met on Satmday »nd elected Mr Ja«. Cunningham as chairnun. The election h.is ci e.ited considerable comnipiit and dissatisfaction heie. It appears tint accoiduig to the Act only three vacancies sliould ha\c occurred, but five were advertised for by the returning ofh'cei, who took his instructions from the chan man of the board. His instructions to the returning officer were unmistakable ; they were to call for nominations to fill hvo vacancies. The latent development in this remarkable affair is an advertisement calline on the returning officer to call for a fresh election, ts the first was illegal. .It may bu illug.il, ami doubtless it is so, but that is not bis fault, and it would look ridiculous in the extreme for him to call for a fre«h election after declaring five men to bo duly elected. No doubt it must lu\e occurred through some misapprehension, but it has caused a good deal of angry comment among ratepayer*, and should never li ivu occurred. This little town of oius he bucome a hot-bed of ill feeling. A paltry election of trn-te-s vuiiiot bj einicl out without a display of piM-.«i).1 feeling, or gome trickery being practiced. We had a B.tiitplc of it in tlie unction of to'ui cum ini-.-aoiiei-.. Even the election ot 'ici-nsing commissioners could not pass off without na.sty i'\|ii('ssiiin-.and doubtful coiiiplitm* its ' being b inched about. One would imagine, from tha trouble taken by some to liold anrl bv othcir. to /et into office, tb it a \ciy goixl thing w.is to bo made out of it. or tlie destinies of a, gie.it nation wcie at st.iUe. All tbw point-, to the necessity of al)obshing aoiup of viii local-gm curing bodies. Kithei do aw.iy with the council or the road hoards, tin* latti-r foi choice. Some ngieo that if the boards aie iibolinhed that the byroads will not bo looked after propaily. There is no tcn-nti w/iy they shoulrl not. Une engineer could do the whole of the Tvork for the council. Pay him enough to let him give the whole of ms time to county work and give up pi ivate practice, and he will sco that the by-roads aie kept in proper repair. The council can bonow money on better terms than the road boatds ; they can rai«o a thousand pounda to the board's hundred, and it would be much better t> have a thousand pounds tpeut at onco in putting roads and bridge* in a- proper and permanent Htntr of repair, than a hundred pounds it year foi ten jears. Besides, for the thousand borrowed by the council, only 21 i>er cent. would have to be refunded to the Government, and that extending over a pel iod of ten years. These are simply my Views. Of course, there may be other and better reasons why the boaids should be retained in preference to the councils, but the Hooner the ratepayers bestir themselves in this matter the better it will be for themselves. Mr W. A. Grtham will deliver his jpronri.si'd lecture on Monday, the iT>th inst, L^jrobn I hope the faimeis and otheis lnterenW %fd in the co operative association will make a point of being present. It will be a poor compliment to pay to one who has taken so much tioublufor their benefit if the attendance is small. The moon will be nearly full, and if the weather prove fine, there will be no excuse for non-attendance. A bazaar in aid of the funds of S. John's ohiirch will be held here early in the rfpnng. Already preparations are, I hear, being made for it. From the length of tiotic* given, it should be a success, for there is ample time to make preparations and canvass for money or gifts. The people of S. John's have bren rather behind other denominations in this lespect, but now that the bazaar is decided upon, I hope it will meet with the buccess tho occasion merits. — (Own Correspondent.)
