NORTH ISLAND TRUNK RAILWAY. Delay in Starting Work.
Oiill readers will be. sui prised to hear that, aftoi the elaborate ceiemony attached to the tnrningof tho sod at the Puniu r<\er on Wednesday last, the prosecution of the w ork is to be delayed. On Thursday mot u ing, by appointment with the District Kuginecr, Mr Hales, Mr Isaac Coates, the contractor, and his suieties attended at the Public Works, Auckland, for tho purpose of signing bonds, &c. They were informed that the papors would not be ready until four o'clock p.m., and also that certain ehuses wore proposed to be added to the conditions about works being stopped m c.ise of war, and no compensation to be allowed, or something to that effect. At four p.m. on again visiting the office, it was found that bonds could not be signed until tho extra conditions were sent up from Wellington. Under these circumstknees Mr Coates returned home, and has wtopped all preparations for starting the work until a further development of tho Gov eminent intentions takes place. Tho delay is all the moio vexatious, as Mr Coates had made a start to got offices and store rooms elected at Te Awamutu for carrying out tho job, and a consideiable amount of expense has been incurred. Wo may mention that the Government have signified (in writing) to Mr Coates then acceptance of his tender, and but for the ceremony of turning the sod, bonds would have been signed a day or two ago.
