This is piobably the action brought by Captain Williams against the Government for damage sustained through the sinking of the s.s. Westport in the liver at Westport Cap tain Williams gained the casein the New Zealand Court, and it will be seen th.it the decision of the latter lias now been {.fanned by the English Coint, to which the Go\ eminent appealed At the inijiicst on the body of the boy (Sppakmau) who was diowned in a well at Featlunton on Sunday the verdict was: "Accidentally diowued through insecure fastening ot the lid of the well." With leference to the leductions of the salary paid to Major Ropata, it is stated that it has only been made in the militia and land pin chase set vice, which at piesent are not performed by the ilijor. As native assessor he was m leceipt of a salary of L'3o per annum, and tins has been mci eased to £100, thus placing him on the same footing as the principal assessors. Another horsewhipping case is reported. The Hebe at the Star Hotel horsewhipped a lodger at the hotel who had been annoying her.
