WELLINGTON, Sunday. The Hinemoa, with His Excellency and party on board, arrived here last night from a visit to the West Coast Sounds. The following are the particulars of the trip :— The Hinemoa left the Bluflatdaylight on the 27th January, those on board being His Excellency the Governor, Lady Jervois, Misses Jervois (2), and Had field (2), Rev. MrJervois, Major C'autley, Dr. Hector and Major Eccles (aide-de-camp.) After leaving the Bluff the Hinemoa wat headed for Stewarts Island and Patterson Inlet, and Ports Adventure and Pegasus were visited in the order named. At each of these ports His Excellency and Major Cautley went ashore and made a minute examination of the several points iv the vatious harbours. This examination was finished on the same day as leaving the Bluff, and on that evening the Hinemoa's course was shaped for the West Toast Sounds, and she arrived at Dusky Sound on the morning of the 28th. Close inspection of Dusky, Break&ea, Doubtful, Thompson, Caswell, George's and Milford Sounds, was made by the Governor and Major Cautley, while the ladies rambled on the hills, and along the shore. It is understood that the nature of His Excellency's visit to the Sounds was not so much for pleasure, but that the Souuds will appear i prominently in the report to be made of the defences of New Zealand. The Hinemoa left Milford Sound at seven o'clock on Thursday night, and arrived here as mentioned above. Four wet days were met with on the trip. While in Milford Sound Dr. Hector put out the guage, and the rainfall for twenty hours registered nearly eleven inches. The beauty of the Sounds ua* greatly admired, especially that of Milford Sound and Crooked Arm, which runs off from Doubtful Inlet. It may be mentioned that from the 24th of January, w hen the Hinemoa left VVellington, until her arrival here last night, Lady Jervois never left the vessel. While among the Sounds His Excellency took the opportunity of visiting the Oaswell Sound Marble Company's quarries, and it is understood that his opinion is not at all favourable to the woiks. * Monday. On Wednesday, Donald Smith, formerly a farmer at Opotiki, but recently residing at Gisborne, was about to again remove his household goods to Masterton, when he left his house to purchase some biscuits prior to starting, and since then he has not returned, anil nothing can be ascertained of his whereabouts. His friends have been searching, thinking he may have met with an accident. He was observed to cross the paddock opposite his house, instead of taking the road to the store, but nothing was thought of it at the time, until his continued absence gave cause for alarm. Elections for the Harbour Board representatives took place to-day for the Hntt County Council and the Chamber of Commerce respejtively, Mejrs Lancaster and Nathan were re-appointed for representatives of the shipping interest. Capt. Rose and Mr J. K. McDonald were nominated ; tqe former gentleman was re-elected by a majority of five to one. For the city representation there were five candidates j result not yet known. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of W. C. McDermott, a clerk in the Government Insurance Department. He is charged with embezzling £40 by falsifying the books. It is believed McDermott haa left Wellington. John Margeth, who was arrested last , week on a charge of obtaining money by false pretences at Auckland and discharged, was re-arrested to-day on the same charge and remanded. { Arrived, Alexa, barque, from Mauri- ' tius, and Doric from London via Auckland.
