KIHIKIHI.

SPECIAL MEETING OF THE TOWN BOABD. A special meeting of the board wns held in Wilkinson's Star Hotel on Saturday evening. Present : Mr Farrell (chairman), Crs. Berry, Tristram, Verner and Wilkinson. On the motion of Or. Tristram, Mr Gresham was appointed solicitor to the board. It was decided that the office of the board be at the residence of the chairman (Mr Farrell), Whitmore-street. The following tenders for gr.ivel from the Puniu river, at per yard, were received :—: — Kennedy, 3s Gd ; McDonnell, 3s 3d ; Kay and Miller, 5s ; Qualtrough, 4a Gd ; Thompson, 4s 4d. From native reserve : Kay .»nd Miller, 2s 9d. On the motion of Cr. Wilkinson, seconded by Cr. Berry, the tender of Mr McDonnell, for gravel from Puniu, was accepted. This concluded the business.

THE KIHIKIHI SCHOOL. With reference to the letter in last issue by " Semper Paratus" (what a name), I may state that in looking over my notes I find the following :—": — " It was felt if the old old committee were not re-elected, Sec." The mistake in my correspondence of the sth is either a printer's error or, in my hurry to catch the mail, I made the mistake, for mistake it certainly is. There is also another error in the first part of the report. It reads : — Considerable disappointment was felt at the result of the election." It should read : Oonsideiable disappointment was felt by a few persons, &c. As regards your correspondent's charge against me of showing partiality, I may give a most emphatic denial to that. I endeavour to give a statement of facts as they occur, without favouring anyone. " Semper Paratus" shows considerable bias himself, as his concluding remarks prove. By the way, why did he not sign himself Tom Pepper, Jack Shepherd, or some such appropriate name, instead of the absurd one he signed. I wonder what it means, and where he got it. I rode four miles to hunt through my school books for a Latin dictionary, but failed to find the word". Perhap« he means Semper Parafcus. It isn't fair of him to inflict his bog Latin on us poor illiterate people. If he were on the school committee the master could manage him nicely with a little tact by flattering his vanity, and praising his attainments, for he is a pedant of the first water. The debating society has been successfully formed. A meeting was held on Saturday at Andersons hotel, at which the rules and bye-laws with slight alterations — of the Cambridge Debating Society, were adopted. There are 20 members at present on the roll. Mr Dyer was elected president, Mr Ellis vice- president, Messrs Grace, Hutchin'-on, Cooper and Rigsr a committee, and Mr Nicholson secretary and treasuier. It was decided to meet fortnightly for four months in the year, the first meeting to be held on the first Tuesday in March, the meetings to be held on every alternate Tuesday. It was also decided that the committee should endeavour to obtain the use of the schoolroom, as there is a fireplace in it which would tend to make a considerable difference in the attendance during the winter months. lam very glad the matter has been taken up so warmly, and hope the interest \\ill not fl.ig. The advantages of a mutual improvement association must be experienced to be thoroughly appreciated, one drawback, however, will be seriously felt by the members : the absence of a public library, the members of the associatian would find it very useful for reference. It is to be hoped some steps will be taken in the matter to obtain one. I do not see why we should be behind other townships in the matter of a library, we , have as large and Appreciative a population as any others that have libraries. Now we I ha\e a town boaid, surely the membpis might take the initiative and try to fill the want.

RESULT OF THE POLLING. A i)i)ll was taken on Saturday to determine whether a sum of £200 .should be borrowed for street improvements. The result showed the ratepayers to be unanimously in favour of bonowinpr the money, not a single individual objecting. As all were in favour of the proposal comparatively few legihtcied their votes, only 3-"> voted representing piopeity to the value of £8,500. So we nuiv now look fin ward to h iving our btreets in good order before next winter.
