LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Professor Payne. Auckland, Friday Night. Pkofessor Payxh gave a private display of his skill with the rifle before a number of members of the Press and other gentlemen. The shooting of the apple from the head, and the coin from the hand was performed repeatedly with complete success. A slight accident, however, occurred on the third time of shooting the apple. Mr W. S. Pulford. manager of the Intercolonial Nows and Advertising Agency, agreed to stand with the apple on his head, and did so with great coolness, but just as the shot was fired it is supposed he braced himself up a little, though unobserved, resulting in the ball grazing the scalp, and inflicting a nasty, though it is not considered serious, wound.

The Mount Eden Fire. Henry Woods, a vagrant, was to-day committed for trial on the charge of causing the fire on Mouut Eden road.

Board of Education. At the Board of Education to-day, the question of the Parr scholarship and O'Donoglme'a action came up. Upon receipt of the telegram from Pair's father, it was resolved te hear any statement Mr Parr, sen., may wish to nuke next week.

Licensing Committees. At the licensing nomination to-day a large number of committeemen wero nominated to represent both the licensed victuallers and the teetotallers.

The Triumph. A cablegram has been received from London to-day, intimating that the English underwriters have definitely refused to pay the risks hold on the s.s. Triumph. The policies on the hull amount to £40,000, and on the home freight, the insurance being effected on the round voyage, to £10,000, making £50,000. Sharsmarkst.
