CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday.
At the half-yearly meeting of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company, the balance sheet showed paid-up capital £19,615 ; liabilities, £1055 ; assets, £1169 ; and expenditure, £9365. The directors elected were Messrs. Spearman, Ihissold, Willhms, and Rhodes. It was resolved to lease the whole block of 53G0 acres, and to bring the compauy under the Act of 1882. At the Reaper and Binder trial, under the auspices of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, the McCormick was first, and the Buckeye second. The Howard was very highly commended. At the Temperance Hotel annual meeting the balance-sheet showed a debit of £774 for the year, and total debit balance of £2342 since the commencement of the company. The Land Board have granted a party of four a license to prospect for gold in the Wilberforce district, Friday. John Campbell, working at the city foundry, waa killed this afternoon, while grinding castings. The emery grinder broke a piece of stone, which struck Campbell, who died instantaneously. Deceased leaves a wife and six children. At Leeston to-day, Messrs Wakefield and McLachlan were nomiuatecl for Selwyn. The show of hands were :—: — Waketield, 64 ; McLachlan, 39.
