At the meeting of householders to form a bchool committee the proceedings were pretty lively. Considerable disappointment was felt at the result of the election. It is much to be regretted that in a small town like this, where all should be united, such diversity of opinion and feeling should exist. Mr W. H. Grace, the chairmen of the outgoing committee, read the report and balance-sheet for the past year, which were adopted. Fifteen gentlemen were nominated for the committee for the ensuiug year, seven of whom, however, retired, leaving eight. A poll Mas taken, which resulted as follows : — W. 11. Grace, 137 ; P. McDonnell, 113; H. Moncrieff, 87; Win. Blencowe, 74 ;J. G-. Berry, 38 ; A. Kay, 23 ; J. Farrell, 22 ; W. Qualtrough, 21. The first seven were therefoie declaied duly elected, an announcement which gave great satisfaction. Indeed, with such a committee &choo} majteis should progress smoothly and satisfactorily. The newly elected committee then held their first meeting, when Mr Grace was unanimously elected chairman, which also gave satisfaction to the householders. Damaging leports of Mr Nicholson, the teacher, having been sent to the Board of Education, the householders determined to eleofe a committee who would allow no interference with their functions, and they have certainly displayed wisdom in their choice, for no one can take exception to any one of the number. It was felt that if the old committee were re-elected it would have led to his removal. Such being the case a great deal of interest has been evinced in. fhe election, the result of which shows unrni.sta'keably the higJ} estimation in wj)ich, both h« mo, Mrs Nwholeou tyre held by thq
majority of residents here. With increased school accommodation, a good working committee, and a competent teacher, the education of out children will bo well looked afler. Indeed, no objection could be taken to any of the eight lemaining candidates, but as the act only allow*, so\<-ii a poll had to be taken. " All-, well that end*, well." Application has been made to the Education boaid to h.ivu the old .school build ing— when the no'v school-house will b'j leady for tlto teaching staff— handed over to them for .i leading i\>mi and hbraiy for fie tow u4iip. The old settler*- say, that for forming 1 this so much needed institution, they, at least, hive a claim it on fm that they did, .it the time of it-, election some 11 vcais ago, c'uliibutc by subscription half of its c >-t. The otlun h.ning been found by the (lomu t-.numt tlion under the pro\ mcial syhtoui. — (Coriespondent.)
