CRICKET. Waikato v. Waipa.

The cricket match between the representative teams of the Wat pa and Waikato counties, came off on Saturday last in the Government paddock, Cambridge. The weather was everything that could be desired, a pleasant breeze and cloudy sky tempering the heat of the sun's rays. There was a good attendance of the public on the ground, including a large number of the fair sex, and to enhance the ploasuie of the day the Cambridge Band, led by Mr J. Stuart, discouised eloquent music at Intervals. An excellent wicket had been pxoparod, but being very fast it was altogether in favoui of the bowlers, as few, if any, of the batsmen had played on anything but very slow wickets this moist season, a fact which will, we fear, militate against their chances in Auckland. The Waipa team were fancied at the start, and as much'as 2to 1 was offered on them. Dr. Waddington and Mr Blaii officiated as umpires, and Cotton for Waikato and Giierson for Waipa captained the teams, Waipa going first to the wickets about 11.30. Soper and Chapman handled the willow to tha bowling of Wilson and Longbottom, both returning with ducks eggs Chapman being clean bowlod in the first over by Longbottom, and Soper caught by Longbottom off Wilson's first ball. Grier&on and Case made a stand for a short time, Grierson putting together 9 by brilliant play, when he gave a chance to Farquharson, which was accepted. Case was next faced by Jenkins, who .speedily retired booked by Longbottom for 0, and Hinton relieved him. Case after increasing the score by 3 succumbed to one of Wilson's shooters and Higginson and Mai tin were qnickly dispose*! of by the same bowler. Hinton meanwhile had scoierl 7 including one splendid hit foi 4 to the boundary of the paddock, when the fatal Wilson scattered his stumps. Pilling now took the bowling at Longbottoms end and disposed _of Laii" for a well played 9, Rigg being caught by Fitzpatiick off Pilling for 2, Sullivan not out. Evtias 0, being 4 byes and %2 % 2 le.ir bye^s. For Waikato Fit/.pati ick and Stevens faced the bowling of Sopor and Hinton. Fit/putrick shottly letiung for 1 when I Collins joined Stevens and runs began to mount up, Collins eventually being caught by Uriel son off Jenkins after a good display of free hitting, foi an innmga of 20. Forrest was bowled by Martin without increasing the score, and Wilson took his place, playing a slashing game until finally run out with 24 to his credit. Stevens who played splendid cricket throughout achieving the top score of 41. Pilling played carefully for 4 and Farquharson was given out lbw to Grierson, Cotton after a caiefully played 3 was bowled by Uiier-jon and Longbottom after scoring a modest 2 offered a catch to Jenkins which was not lefused. Haimona increased the scoie by 4 and was bowled by Case and Stubbing who might with advantage have been put in enilier wa.s not ou> for 9, total 133 including 13 extras. Waipa had now an up-hill fight before them and as it turned out they were oveimatched, for, though the match was gamely contested, the team retiied for a score of 84, Waikato being victoiious by one innings and 11 runs to spaie. The bowling of Wilson and Longbottom in the first innings was excellent, and may be said to have almost won the match 'The fielding of the Waikato team also was. excellent. Jjofcli teams sat down at 3 o'clock to u veiy (substantial luncheon at Kirkwoods hotel. Aftei the match a meeting of ciicketeis, held at the same place, elected Messi-s Forrest, Cotton, Giieison, and Soper a committee to select the team which will champion Waikato in Auckland next week. The number of available men at tins season is, howe\er, small. We append the lull scoie of each side. Waipa luid to play two .substitutes :—: — VAU'A. Ist innings. 2nd innings.
